Privacy laws in India

In the last two years I have been surprised how perfect strangers seem to know my birthday and people I have never heard of, who have got hold of my email addresses which I have never published online. Unlike most democratic countries, in India there is some ambiguity on the privacy rights of private citizens. And if the information obtained by snooping is misused, who will compensate me for the damage / harassment caused?
