Group buying / crowd bargain/discount deal websites in India

Posted in business, internet

Many Group buying / crowd bargain/discount deal websites have become very popular in the last one year in India.
Some of the websites are:
Snapdeal
Wanamo
Mydala
Mobstreet
Grabbon
Koovs
Group2Deal
Groupndeal.com
Ebay.in ( Deal of the day and week)
FutureBazaar ( Deal of the day and week)
24hoursloot.com

These websites mainly offer deals from restaurants, spas, beauty treatments, movie tickets and other recreational activities. Snapdeal from Jasper India seems to be sending offers regularly. Most of these offers are city specific and limited to major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore. You pay a small amount (Rs 25- Rs 50 ) online by Credit card/Debit card/ Netbanking and the rest is paid to the Merchant in cash after availing of the deal. Discounts usually vary from 90% to 30% .

The deals offered by the companies are presented well on their websites with a detailed description of the facilities available. At times, specific pricing of the various food items or services is not available, which may be inconvenient for prospective customers. These group buying websites could be a good online marketing option for small businesses.

Photon plus prepaid usage

Posted in internet

If you wish to monitor the usage of your Photon plus prepaid connection, you have to register for an account at www.tataindicom.com.  A new user has to provide the phone number and an email address to create an account.

The usage is shown in 2 formats, in terms of Rupees and in the number of bytes used during each session.
They also send alerts by SMS to your mobile with details of the balance remaining in your account. However the usage data has not been updated since 12 May, 2010. Though the connection has been used several times, the balance has not been updated/ reduced.

Disable catch all email address

Posted in internet

If you use web hosting where the provider has specified the amount of space available,  junk emails can cause the space to fill up quickly.  Some hosting providers like Hostgator also specify the maximum number of inodes you can have in a shared hosting account, and each email corresponds to separate inode.

In Cpanel , you can  disable catch all by setting default ID to :fail: no such user here

For reseller / VPS/ dedicated server, you can also login to the WHM >> Tweak Settings and set “Default catch-all/default address behavior for new accounts. fail is usually the best choice if you are getting mail attacks.

Shell/SSH access

Posted in internet

Shell/SSH access on a Linux, BSD or Unix-type server is access to a command prompt on the server itself. This enables you to issue commands as a user of the system – for example, for changing permissions on files, copying, moving, deleting and moving to a folder.  Most of the cheaper web hosting packages do not offer shell access.

On a dedicated server or VPS, you will probably also have “root” access (like Administrator access in Windows) and you will be able to compile and install programs, update and patch your system and a whole lot more.  Though most web hosting Control Panels like Cpanel offer many features, they have many limitations, like you cannot find the files last modified or delete certain files easily.

Some of the popular  SSH clients are:

Privacy laws in India

Posted in internet

In the last two years I have been surprised how perfect strangers seem to know my birthday and people I have never heard of, who have got hold of my email addresses which I have never published online. Unlike most democratic countries, in India there is some ambiguity on the privacy rights of private citizens. And if the information obtained by snooping is misused, who will compensate me for the damage / harassment caused?

Some articles on privacy laws in India
