Indian online media companies

Posted in business, internet

A post on the failure of  Indian media companies online.   For any business  to be profitable, the cost of producing content should be less than the revenues.   Unfortunately there are very few reliable means of monetizing  quality content written for the Indian market today.

The other factor is that most internet companies follow the latest trends  in USA and do not do enough market research of the local market.   Verisign is advertising .com extensively to increase the marketshare, but India remains a very low tech country. I continue to be amazed that many of the tech gurus and internet “experts” (some of whom have newspaper columns), continue to use a wordpress or blogspot subdomain, which can be deleted any time.    From fairly reliable sources, approximately  twenty percent or less SMEs with a website and domain name registration, actually pay for the domain name online, others prefer offline methods.  If  you do not understand your customer and his or her needs well, how  will you make money online?

Corporate spying and tech gadgets

Posted in business, cyberlaw

As this article illustrates,  email interception is rampant.

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/computersecurity/2009-07-28-corporate-espionage-recession-tech_N.htm

In USA,  business executives get arrested, in India they know they can get away with it. So you get mails with “guess who I am” .

Cheap online content

A very detailed articles  on online content generation .  Search engines today cannot distinguish between low  and high quality content,  so  it is easier and more rewarding today to churn out poor quality content, then take the effort to write something really useful.  Using an algorithm to find the most in demand information using ISP data is a good innovation and also shows that online privacy is non existent.

Data interception and email

Posted in business, cyberlaw, internet, law

Online shopping is relatively safe since most ecommerce stores use a secure (https:// ) connection .   Most people use email for personal correspondence , sending jokes and other trivial information, so  email security  solutions are not easily available.  But if you use email for sending confidential information like pricing or potential buyer information, the current  solutions are inadequate.   Your well funded competitor will hire a hacker who will intercept, delay and modify your emails and the damage can results in losses of thousands of dollars or more.

Making money with a network of websites

Interesting post on making money with a network of websites , working at home.   Most of the coverage of the online media in India is focused only on the big internet companies , which have funding  from various sources.  It is difficult for most people to believe that a single person can manage a large number of websites, but once you set them up, they are largely a passive source of income.

As stated in the interview working from home “is much more efficient because I don’t have to spend time commuting or dressing up.” Of course, you have to be very disciplined, with no distractions, but you can also afford to take  a lot more risks.  To succeed you need to experiment a lot  and fail often.

Advertising networks

Posted in business, internet

Selecting an advertising network for your content website

If you have a large number of websites monetized by advertising, finding a suitable ad network is  important .
Online advertising can be classified into 2 major categories:
1. Pay per click (PPC) advertising
2. Display advertising

PPC advertising is vulnerable to click fraud and there are only 2 major companies who can dictate the price of clicks.  Some of the second tier PPC search engines like Exoclick verify your account only after you have generated 100 clicks. There is little transparency for the publishers and advertisers, so I have been focusing on Display advertising.

I have been experimenting with different display advertising programs / networks. Ideally the ad network should:
1.Count all impressions and offer detailed statistics.
2.Offer a good CPM  (for thousand impressions) rate for traffic worldwide. Currently, most networks offer a good CPM rate only for tier 1 traffic (USA , Canada). I am getting a CPM of just US $0.04 for UK traffic.
3.Pay through Paypal on time.
4.Offer Net15 days payment terms
5.Be free of spyware/ malware / redirects.

I am using about 10 networks at present and have not received payment from many of them since I have just started using them. Once you find a reliable ad network, it can be a good source of passive income.

Sole proprietorship

Posted in business

While starting a business,  you have to choose the form of business and the simplest form of business is a sole proprietorship.  However, the legal liability of the proprietorship  is unlimited, and personal assets can be attached in case there is a product problem.
