Paypal India changes from March 1, 2011

For a few days after March 1, 2011, Paypal users in India got the following notification after logging in to their Paypal account.

Notification for PayPal users in India
With effect from 1 March 2011, you are required to comply with the requirements set out in the notification of the Reserve Bank of India governing the processing and settlement of export-related receipts facilitated by online payment gateways (“RBI Guidelines”).

1.Any balance in and all future payments into your PayPal account may not be used to buy goods or services and must be transferred to your bank account in India within 7 days from the receipt of confirmation from the buyer in respect of the goods or services; and
2.Export-related payments for goods and services into your PayPal account may not exceed US$500 per transaction. Click here to learn more.
Go to My Account

The notification did not appear for a few days, but it is now again visible.

Other than blocking mass payments , no other major changes have appeared in Paypal site for Indian users. Many personal and premier account holders have been able to send money from their account and receive money, though some Paypal business account holders have had the $500 restriction implemented and accounts limited. Paypal users who have written to Paypal support have been told that their accounts are being monitored. A similar rule seems to be implemented in  Turkey without advance notification with users unable to pay from Paypal balance.

Till January 2010, any Paypal user could have one business and one personal account as per Paypal’s Terms of Service. After Paypal wanted users to associate a PAN number with each account, some users had to choose between the business and personal account, since a PAN number could be associated with one account only.  With the new changes users now face the following disadvantages:
1. They are forced to withdraw at the prevailing exchange rate, earlier they could time their withdrawals to get the best exchange rate.
2. Higher exchange rates for payments in US$ -  Visa/ Mastercard charge around Rs 47/$ , Paypal charges approx. Rs 46/$ .

Unpaid contributors and internet companies

Posted in business, internet, media

Many internet companies have very high valuations and a major part of the value for some of these companies is created by  unpaid contributors.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/14/business/media/14carr.html?_r=1&src=me&ref=business

Some platforms offer revenue sharing, but for most of the larger companies the content is created free of cost and the platform owner incurs the cost of hosting, promotion and moderation of the free content.

Changes in Paypal User agreement

From https://www.paypal-apac.com/india/

In order to comply with the RBI Guidelines, our user agreement in India will be amended for the following services as follows:

1.Any balance in and all future payments into your PayPal account may not be used to buy goods or services and must be transferred to your bank account in India within 7 days from the receipt of confirmation from the buyer in respect of the goods or services; and

2.Export-related payments for goods and services into your PayPal account may not exceed US$500 per transaction.

Many online publishers / webmasters earn more than $500 from advertising from  a single source, so the ad network will either split the payments or use alternate payment methods.  As conditions change, you always find new methods.

Field work, fact and fiction

Posted in cyberlaw, internet, media

This article on India’s knowledge bankruptcy

http://www.livemint.com/2011/01/21202028/India8217s-knowledge-bankru.html?d=1

summarises how little field work or practical experience are used by many “experts”. Even those working in “high -tech” areas will readily believe in hearsay and gossip which is not based of facts but often concocted by different individuals for personal gain.

Books, authors, online and offline publishers in India

Posted in internet, media, technical

As an online publisher ,  I have often wondered how the number of  visitors to my websites compare with best selling authors in India.

From http://business.in.com/printcontent/17642

An English book was considered a bestseller if it sold 10,000 copies. Five Point Someone and each of the other books he wrote sold a million.

I have been reading a lot of books in the last few months and books published offline are usually of  much better quality than most of the content online (especially if it is India specific).  An online publisher with a network of websites gets more than one lakh visitors a month , more than a million visitors a year,  but monetizing the websites can be difficult.  Profits depend both on your technical and writing skills.

Renewing Photon + Prepaid connection

Posted in internet, media

You can renew your Tata Indicom Photon+ connection online at their website tataindicom.com .
But unlike online most payment options, you can only renew by payment through Netbanking or Paymate. They do not accept credit card, debit card payments. Though they offer fund transfer through many banks, payment through HDFC bank Netbanking was disabled on 15 July, 2010 and remained disabled for some time.

Earlier, you could renew the prepaid Photon + connection for a period of 90 days only, now they are offering 2 more additional options

  • 180 days for  Rs 2001, 8 GB download
  • 360 days for Rs 5001 , 20 GB download

While the Photon+ is a very convenient internet connection, it may not be used with routers, which are required for home security applications.

Crowdsourcing / Workers on demand website

One of big advantages of the internet is the ability to work from anywhere.  A number of  websites  offer crowdsourcing  / workers on demand .   Some of these websites are:

Amazon Mechanical turk – mturk.com – the oldest, you can use your Amazon login, offers payment in Indian Rupees. Has a large number of tasks available, usually in thousands for US residents.
Microworkers – microworkers.com – workers can appeal if a task is not approved, payment through Paypal , Moneybookers and check.
Cloudcrowd.com – need a Facebook account, offered daily payments through Paypal
Crowdflower.com
Jobboy.com
Simpleworkers.com
Shortask.com
Myeasytask.com
Humangrid.de (redirects to clickworker.com)
Minijobz.com
Rapidworkers.com
Domywork.net – for students
Minuteworkers.com
Iamoney.com
Saycomment.com
MyMicroJob.com

Payment for each task usually varies from 5 cents to a dollar and completed tasks are to be approved manually. After signing up on these websites for testing, there seems to be a lot of difference in the way these websites are run. Popular tasks involve signing up for programs, writing blog posts, manipulating social media, posting links. Some tasks are reserved for users from USA / Canada. You can earn a few dollars a month with these websites in your free time.

Torrents and free downloads

Posted in internet, law, media

As some one who does not use the internet for downloading movies and songs, bit torrent and desi torrent were a great mystery to me .   This article on  Torrents and Free Downloads  explains how it works and why it is so popular.

It also shows that selling any digital product online to consumers will be difficult in India,  it will be shared for free online.

Rajshri Films  web venture is given extensive coverage in the online blogs, but the numbers paint a different picture.
Rajjat’s strategy is to support free views with advertising, and charge users $9.99 to buy newly released movies ($4.99 for older releases). Still, Rajjat’s paid-for content has precious few takers—no more than 1,000 a month, he confesses, and mainly NRIs.

There are many smaller companies which have better revenues.  If  you are not compensated fairly  for your efforts, you are likely to look out for other options.
